September 28, 2000   Old Cows, New Friends-

Some years back I sold a Kingfisher daughter we raised named Millie at the Gathering Sale. She was very pretty paint cow with fifty inches of horn. Though I was showing cattle at the time, I never showed her. George Gregory purchased her and though George shows cattle, he never showed Millie. A year or two later he traded her to Gary Henry and though Gary Henry shows a lot of cattle and showed one of Millie's offspring, Gary chose not to show her either. Gary recently sold her to Roger and Adair Buck. Just to prove beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they thought she was show quality and brought Millie to the East Texas State Fair. Roger and Adair showed her in the non-haltered show. I don't know who was cheering louder, Roger or me, when she was named Grand Champion All Age Cow in the non-haltered show.

November 18, 2000-

Thanks to William and Gail Wood for their purchase of Jabez! Jabez, a Meshach son out of the Joshua daughter Lydia, born 12-31-99, represented the Assad Longhorn Cattle Company at 9 Texas Longhorn shows. Though Jabez was always the youngest in his class, he placed first in class 5 times, won second 3 times, and won third once. Jabez won Reserve Junior Champion Bull at the ITLA Tyler show, and Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the TLBAA Lufkin show. Jabez demonstrates that Meshach offspring can do well in either ITLA or TLBAA shows, and that a GOOD bull can win even if  he was born the last day of the class.
Thanks to Bob Dube and Matt Menchaca for showing Jabez. ( Update; March 7, 2004 Firewalker a son of Jabez  is named Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the Houston, Livestock Show & Rodeo!!! )

December 6, 2001- The Wortham Theater, Houston, Texas

Texas Longhorns are so much fun and can do so many things. At the prestigious Wortham Theater on the stage of the Cullen Auditorium, the flashy twins Jonathan and David sired by Meshach out of the Joshua daughter Zebudah led in by the two greatest Texas Longhorn showmen in the the world Bob Dube and Bob Garner started Cow Parade Houston. Cow Parade Houston is a charitable event benefiting Texas Children's Hospital . Life size fiberglass cows were given to local artists to paint and decorate any way they chose.  Their finished product  was auctioned with the proceeds going to Texas Children's Hospital. I got to carry the shovel and broom while Bob and Bob paraded Jonathan and David around the stage to the delight of the audience while the vice-president of Sotheby's (the world famous London auction firm) conducted a lively, fast-paced auction. The 9 month old twins didn't slip, didn't poop and sold for $12,000. The 62 lots plus the twins raised over $600,000 for Texas Children's, a real fun evening. Since the twins were the first lot, Bob Garner his date, Joan, Debbie, and I got to watch the rest of the auction. Bob Dube disappeared. We wondered whether he was visiting the open bar or looking for the second highest bidder on the twins!  When I became a life insurance agent in 1970 some of the first people I sold life insurance to were  Physicians who were interns at Texas Children's Hospital. What a fun way to say "Thanks".

October 2, 2012 Matthew passed away today.

October 26, 2012 We had a Lord blessed day at the 2012 International Texas Longhorn Championship Show in Oklahoma City. This year it was held in conjunction with the TLMA's World Championship Horn Measuring Contest so there were more than twice the number of people and cattle than usually participate at the International Convention. The arena was set up with the World Championship Horn Measuring on the left and the International Texas Longhorn Championship Show on the right.  With a slight turn of one's head, the audience could enjoy both. Our Texas Longhorns seemed to enjoy the big audience.  Psalm 55:16 won the first class.  Acts 10:34 won 3rd in the second class and 2nd Samuel won 2nd in the fourth class.  Psalm 37:4 won second in class 11 and was named Reserve Champion Senior Heifer.  Romans 5:21 won 1st in class 12.  In the bulls, John 16:9 won third in class 25.  John 14:21 won first in class 29.

Then came the group classes.  Acts 10:34 and and Romans 5:21 teamed up to win Produce of Dam for their mom, Psalm 34:1, a Matthew daughter.  We had two entries in Produce of Dam.  Psalm 37:4 and Psalm 55:16 won 2nd in Produce of Dam for their mom, Hebrews 13:8.  The final class, Class 41, was Get of Sire. Our entries from Produce of Dam, Romans 5:21 and Psalm 37:4, teamed up with John 14:21 to win Get of Sire for their dad, Psalm 138:7!  The audience got to see a lot of pretty Texas Longhorn cattle and hear a lot of good Bible verses and just maybe that's why they do so well.

October 30, 2012 Thanks to Gordon & Pattie Kirk for their purchase of Psalm 37:4! A funny thing happened on the way home from the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza.  Bonnie Dube discovered a new way to sell a Texas Longhorn cow.  The story begins two months before the Texas Longhorn Extravaganza when Gordon and Pattie Kirk  purchased a young herd sire prospect and two heifers from us.  One of the heifers was too young to wean and I wanted to show her as a calf at side of her dam Psalm 37:4 at the International Texas Longhorn Championship Show.  Gordon agreed to let me take her to the show and we planned to deliver her on the way home from Oklahoma City.  Psalm 37:4 is very correct and pretty colored cow, yellow and white tiger striped with the widest horns of all our Psalm 138:7 daughters'. Her daughter by Winsome, a Winchester son, is outstanding.
At the International Texas Longhorn Championship Show, there was a lot of high-quality competition.   When it was Psalm 37:4's time to show, it was a tough class and there were several really good cows in the class.  The judge kept looking at her and her calf but awarded First in Class to another really quality Texas Longhorn owned by Doug Ruppert.  In the Championship round, the first place cow won Champion Senior Heifer, so Psalm 34:7 was brought back in to compete for Reserve Champion.  The judge kept looking at another quality cow and then at ours and then at the calf.  After a couple of looks he awarded Psalm 37:4 Reserve Champion Senior Heifer.  I really felt like the calf made the difference so I sent the belt buckle that she had won to be given to Gordon when the calf was delivered.  Bob Dube, who had brought two trailers of cattle to the Extravaganza, sent his wife, Bonnie, home with the show cattle on Saturday morning after the show.  On Sunday I got a call from Bobby saying that Bonnie had dropped off the calf and mistakenly dropped off Psalm 37:4 also. He said he would go back and get the cow if I would make the arrangements.  When I called Gordon to set up a convenient time, he said that cow and calf looked so pretty together that he couldn't bear to separate them and purchased Psalm 37:4 also.  So who knows, maybe Bonnie has discovered a new way to sell Texas Longhorns!
