September 28, 2000 Old Cows, New Friends-
Some years back I sold a Kingfisher daughter we raised named
Millie at the Gathering Sale. She was very pretty paint cow with fifty inches of
horn. Though I was showing cattle at the time, I never showed her. George
Gregory purchased her and though George shows cattle, he never showed Millie. A
year or two later he traded her to Gary Henry and though Gary Henry shows a lot
of cattle and showed one of Millie's offspring, Gary chose not to show her
either. Gary recently sold her to Roger and Adair Buck. Just to prove beauty is
in the eye of the beholder, they thought she was show quality and brought Millie
to the East Texas State Fair. Roger and Adair showed her in the non-haltered
show. I don't know who was cheering louder, Roger or me, when she was named
Grand Champion All Age Cow in the non-haltered show.
November 18, 2000-

Thanks to William and Gail Wood for their purchase of
Jabez! Jabez, a Meshach son out of the Joshua daughter Lydia, born 12-31-99,
represented the Assad Longhorn Cattle Company at 9 Texas Longhorn shows. Though
Jabez was always the youngest in his class, he placed first in class 5 times,
won second 3 times, and won third once. Jabez won Reserve Junior Champion Bull
at the ITLA Tyler show, and Reserve Grand Champion Bull at the TLBAA Lufkin
show. Jabez demonstrates that Meshach offspring can do well in either ITLA
or TLBAA shows, and that a GOOD bull can win even if he was born the last day of
the class.
Thanks to Bob Dube and Matt Menchaca for showing Jabez. (
Update; March 7, 2004 Firewalker a son of Jabez is named

December 6, 2001- The Wortham Theater, Houston, Texas
Texas Longhorns are so much fun and can do so many things. At
the prestigious Wortham Theater on the stage of the Cullen Auditorium, the
flashy twins
Jonathan and David sired by Meshach out of the Joshua daughter Zebudah led in by the two greatest Texas Longhorn showmen in the the
world Bob Dube and Bob Garner started Cow Parade Houston. Cow Parade Houston is
a charitable event benefiting Texas Children's Hospital . Life size fiberglass
cows were given to local artists to paint and decorate any way they chose.
Their finished product was auctioned with the proceeds going to Texas
Children's Hospital. I got to carry the shovel and broom while Bob and Bob
paraded Jonathan and David around the stage to the delight of the audience while
the vice-president of Sotheby's (the world famous London auction firm) conducted
a lively, fast-paced auction. The 9 month old twins didn't slip, didn't poop and
sold for $12,000. The 62 lots plus the twins raised over $600,000 for Texas
Children's, a real fun evening. Since the twins were the first lot,
Bob Garner his date, Joan, Debbie, and I got to watch the rest of the auction.
Bob Dube disappeared. We wondered whether he was visiting the open bar or
looking for the second highest bidder on the twins! When I became a life insurance agent in 1970 some of the
first people I sold life insurance to were Physicians who were interns at
Texas Children's. What a fun way to say "Thanks".
